Preface
In 1955 the State Historical Museum celebrated a 100-ycars annivcrsaryof the date of birth of Alexiy Vassilievich Oreshnikov — one of the founders and the first chief keeper of the Historical museum, a creator of the numismatical collection as well as the first Head of the Sector of Numismatics, presently known as the Department of Numismatics (hereinunder — DN) of the Historical museum. Alexiy V. Oreshnikov was one oft he founders oft he Russian numismatical science and an almost unalterableeditorofthescolarly treatises on numismatics, published in Moscow at the verge of the XIX—XX centuries, which also included the Collections of Numismatical Works - "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik" (the third and the last volume thereof was published in 1915).
A.V.Oreshnikov's jubilee was marked by the renewed issuing of "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik". Its Part 1, dedicated to the Russian numismatics, saw the light in 1955 as the XXVh volume of the State Historical Museum Wbrks (edited by A.A.Sivers). In 1957 and under D.B.Shelov's editorship was printed Part II,alsoasacollectionoftheState Historical MuseumW3rks(\folumeXXVI). It contained articles on ancient and oriental, as well as medieval European numismatics.
These publications were followed by a prolonged interval in theiredition and it was not until the beginning of the 1970-s, when their two sequels — Parts III and IV - were set to print. Besides Part III was not published until 1974, while Part IV was issued three years ahead - in 1971. The 1974 issue was entitled " Part III" and the 1971 issue bore the name of "Volume IV". "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik" № III was almost entirely occupied by N.M.Metz's monography "Monety Velikogo Кnia hestva Moskovskogo (1425—1462)" (The Coinage of the Great Princedom of Moscow (1425-1462)), being only partially enlarged by a few articles dealing with the creative life of the author of the said monography, who died most untimely in 1965, as well as by the comments to the main contents thereof. The Volume IVcollection which was represented by four issues, covered various topics and wasedited by V. L. Yanin.
The First and the Second Issues of Part V of "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik" were published in 1977 under the editorship of Ye.A. Davidovich.

Part VI of "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik" edited by G. A. Fyodorov-Davydov was printed in 1980. This one was a purely topical issue — "Monetnye klady  sobraniya Gosudarstvennogo Istoricheskogo Muzeya"(Coin Hoards in the State Historical Museum collcction).
In that same year and stalling with the next-to-he Part VII, the Works Collections were once again being published within the Series of the State Historical Museum Works (i.e. Sbornik VII Issue 53 under the title off "Pamyatniki Russkogo Denezhnogo Obraschctiiya XVIII- XX vv." ( The Monuments of the Russian Monetary Circulation of XVIII-XX centuries). Effective since the same year, the title "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik" was demoted to a sub-heading and all further references to this publication used to occupya few lines, since the Ministry of Culture, under which supervision was the State Historical Museum, due to reasons totally unknown to us, demanded that our Collections of Works were to be issued under varying titles which would reflect their contents more explicitly.
Since then all the ensuing publications of the Collections acquired every feature of a serial publication — with a similar design of all their covers, differing only in colour. They all are published as on going issues of the State Historical Museum Works with the titles as follows: "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik" VIII "Numizmaticheskiye Pamyatniki Istoricheskogo Muzeya" (Numismatical Monuments ofthe State Historical Museum), ed. by Ye. I. Kamentseva, 1983; Sbornik IX-"Novye Numizmaticheskiye Issledovaniya"(Recent Numismatical Studies), ed. by A. S. Melnikova, 1986; Sbornik X — "Numizmatika: Materialy i Issledovaniya" (Numismatics: Materials and Studies), ed. by A. S. At the meeting of the 2003 Council on Researh Problems (Numismatics) it was decided to give back the title of "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik" to our publicationsas its main hcader and to al togcthcr give up the practice of generalizing titles, provided that an indication of its issuing by the State Historical Museum (GIM) would be entered therein. All this will be further completed by a Serial Issue Number of the State Historical Museum Works.
"Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik GIM" (GIM Numismatical Collections of Works) will be the official title of the periodical publications of the scholarly treatises by the Numismatics Department of the State Historical Museum starting with its Volume XVI. This would distinguish the said publications from the serial issues of "Numizmaticheskiyc Sborniki MNO" (Numismatical Collections of  Works ofthe Moscow Socicty of Numismatics) as well as from random publications of "Numizmatichcskiy Sbornik" Gosudarstvcnnogo Ermitazha(The State Hermitage Numismatical Collections of Works).

Starting from its very first issuc thc cditorial board of thc GIM Numismatical Collections saw fit not to limit the ranks of contributors down to the Museum Staff workers proper, yet on the contrary to open the spaces of the publication in question to a wide community of researchcrs. At various times our almanachs were honoured by contributions from the authors who are rightfully called the varsity of the contemporary Russian historical and numismatical Science, mentioning among them V. L. Yanin, G. A. Fyodorov-Davydov, D. B. Shelov, P. O. Karyshkovskiy, A. I. Yukht, I. G. Spasskiy, Ye. A. Davidovich, I. V. Mozhciko to name but a few, as well as by many others. We shall also be glad to host articles very by those beginners, who would gain the essential expertise in the field of scicntific  publications encouraged by our hospitality.
We hope that under this new, or, to be more precise, under this renewed title our GIM Numismatical Collections would never cease to attract professional interest from those circles of the readership who are fascinated by the research conducted in the field of Numismatics. In spite of the still more and more explicit tendency to commercialise our field of Science and to substitute the scholarly approach by evaluation of coins as collectible pieces, which leads to domination of various price-catalogues and attribution manuals in the contemporary numismatical literature, we shall endeavour to preserve our approach to numismatical monuments in the first place as to properly historical sources.

In our " Preface" we shall not introduce the topic of any critical analysis of the by articles represented in this Collection — we would rather relegate this right to our readers - while we would just point out a few contributions hereto, where the historical monuments are "interpreted" in the historical context and where the functional semantics of the researched numismatical sources is developed in a
our most explicit manner.
The article "Medal v Chest Barona Ye. F. Asha" (Medal in Honour of Baron Ye.F.Ash) by A. N. Aleksyeev deals with a certain act of striking a particularly rare commemorative medal in honour of Baron Yegor Frantzevich Ash for his achievements in curbing the epidemics of plague within the Russian Army in 1770. This medal was struck at the St.-Petersburg mint. The Imperial Senate subsequently decreed to expropriate and destroy the said medals, proclaiming Baron Ash a faked entity and demanding punishment of State Councellor Schlatter, who had been the initiator of the said act of minting. The reason for such drastic measures appeared to be a non-sanctioned nature of the issue, as neither the medal's design nor the intention of the issue itself were
submitted to the High Approval by the Empress. The author discusses this episode within the context of the Russian award system traditions (XV- beginning of the XVIII centuries) when one of possible forms of award was represented by the so called "Gosudarevo Zhalovannoye Slovo" (the Potentate's Word of Commendation decree) and accompanied by donation of golden pieces (coins), which in the XVIII century evolved into commemorative medals as such. The Supreme Power used to regard acts of bestowing the commemorative medals as one of substantial and most effective means of domestic politics, therefore their minting was strictly limited by the Imperial Authority. "An incident with creation and existance of the commemorative medal in honour of Ye. F. Ash", concludes the author, "is a witness of social and political aspects of medal-making art in Russia in XVIII century".

A history of yet another rare medal "Na Darovaniye Prav ludeyam" (On Bestowing of Rights Unto the Jews) struck in 1805 - discussed in the article by D. Z. Feldman "K lstorii Poyavleniya Redkoj "Yevreyskoy" Medali v Chest' Alexandra 1" (To a History of Making a Rare "Jewish" Medal in Honour of the Emperor Alexander I) — also unfolds a functional purpose of commemorative medals as an instrument of domestic politics. The date borne on a medal - February 9, 1805 — not only specifies the time of cancelling the double taxation of the jews residing in Russia, an event bearing no witness in either contemporary literature or official documents of the epoch, but also reveals the exact nature of the taxation itself. The aforesaid double taxation, enforced by the Imperial Decree of June 23, 1794, used to be cancelled (and imposed again) at random with the ascension of Alexander I to the throne by no special decree. The medal "Na Darovaniye Prav Iudeyam" allows us to assume that the Law on complete extraction of t he Jews from under the double taxation, which then failed to pass, on February 9, 1805 still was at the preparatory stage. A trial medal was speedily issued, thus offering the future generations an interesting document on one ofthe episodes of domestic politics in the "magnificent beginning of Alexander's reign".

An article by A. S. Kruchinin entitled "K Voprosu o Nagrazhdenii Rossiyskimi Imperatorskimi Ordenami na Juge Rossii v Gody Grazhdanskoj Vojny" (Further to Decorations by the Imperial Russian Orders in the Southern Parts of Russia During the Russian Civil War) is based on archive preserved papers and deals with a presently argued subject of the decorative politics adopted by the Supreme Command of the White Guards Forces. It appears to bear a form of a psychologically motivated analysis of ill-percieved and often somewhat inconsequential actions of the White Guards' Command with regard to application ofthe Russian Imperial Decorations in this "non-military conflict".
Of much interest is an article by V. A. Shishanov, which is dedicated to a subject as often as not failing to attract researchers' interest — a moneywise politics of the Russian government and means of monetary circulation on the very verge of XVIII-XIX ccnturics. The author discusscs the entry of the Lithuanian, Polish, Byelorussian and Ukrainian territories into the sphere of Russian economy as the result ofthe triple division of Rzcch Pospolita (in 1772, 1793 and 1795), Russian Government had to face the task of adaptation ofthe govern mental and financial systems ofthe newly acquired territories to the Russian standards. The author traces the process of gradual introduction of the new "gubcrnii" (areas) which had been by then only recently "affiliated from Poland" to the Russian monetary system, gravely influenced at the turn of the XVIII-XIX ccnturics by the devastatingly inflated paper "assignatsii" (credit bills) with their constantly falling exchange rate to "spink" coins. The local realities of life also tended to conflict with the politics of unification of both tax and financial systems.
The proclamative design of the means of payment, so expressly manifested by the ancient and medieval coins has been also widely used in the present times. This is the very approach used by I.S.Shikanova to investigate the money emissions, authorised by Ataman Semionov in the years of Civil W&r in Russia (covering the period of January—November 1920). The design of the money issued allows us to clearly portray the process of shifting the political orientation together with a gradual decline of ambitions of this one candidate to the Supreme Dictatorship of Russia among so many others.

Development of ancient and medieval numismatics has recently gained a new impetus due to a widespread utilization of metal-detecting devices. Thanks to their application our understanding of monetary circulation components has witnessed a drastic change, as not only hoards of coins, but also large quantities of single coins are being unearthed at present. A material source' base ofthe Russian medieval numismatics has been especially enlarged through this factor, and particularly true this is of our concept of its contents. Previously the numismatists used to consider a hoard of coins as a "momentary snapshot" of the local monetary circulation, portraying the "status quo" at the time of its concealement. At present this concept apparently fails to stay true to life. As a "momentary snapshot" we should now regard the ground collected pieces, found with the help of metal-detectors. Before the eyes of a scholar it would sufficiently open the entire spectrum of the means of payment, used by our ancestors on a day-to-day basis. One should especially note a sheer bulk of copper coins - worthy to be compared with the hoard coins, which used to be meticulously selected to be preserved as a treasure. We could only wish that a substantial share of the hunted "booty" passed into the hands of the museum staff experts, thereafter enjoying a thorough scholarly coverage. How many riddles ofthe Russian medieval coinage, riddles just because of the scarce material base, would have donated us their clues by now, how many mysteries would have been on the verge of successful resolving! To our deepest sorrow, in a twinkle of an eye the unearthed pieces stream from the hands ofthe majority of "booty hunters" into antiquary markets, where no one is that anxious to verify the exact location of the find or to preserve as an entity the bulk of uncovered items, which subsequently perish for the science no trace left. And antiquary pedlars — as always - arc chasing the "unique" pieces while their ignorance forbids them to percicvc of what tremendous value would be common items if preserved as a wholesome complex and accompanied bу exact data on how and where they were found.

An apparently growing interest to the Russian medieval coinage - one of the most important though not enough covered areas ofthe Russian monetary circulation - could actually reflect the growing base of material sources. Detailed accounts by I.V. Volkov in his article "O Khronologii Monctnogo Chckana Moskvy i Serpukhova Nachala XV v." (On Chronology of Coinage of Moscow and Serpukhov in the Beginning of XVcent.) and by V. V. Zaitsev in " Denezhnaya Reforma 20-kh Godov XV-gov.: Datirovka i Soderzhaniye" (Monetary Reform of the Second Decade ofthe XV century: its Contents and Dating) offer a new outlook on the periodization of an early stages of creation of an all-Russian monetary system in the Great Princedom of Moscow in the first decades ofthe XV century. An article by V. V. Zaitsev and O. P. Mamontova "Tarusskiy Klad Russkih Monet Pervoy Treti XVI v." (ATarussa Hoard of Russian Coins ofthe First Three Decades of the XVI cent.) introduces a new hoard of Russian "udel" (regional) coins from the State Historical Museum collection into scientific circulation.

The articles, hosted in the XVI th Volume of "Numizmaticheskiy Sbornik", represent to a certain degree the mainframe topics of reports and announcements, regularly offered by the participants at the annual All-Russian Numismatical Conferences. Our reader will find an article on Chinese coinage — a rare and a really exotic guest of our publications — in exquisite essays contributed by N. V. Ivochkina and V. A. Belyayev. Oriental theme is further supplemented by a contribution from VN.Nastich: "Novye Materialy к Istorii Kokandskogo Khanstva" (New Evidence on the History of the Khanate of Kokand), as well as by A.A.Molchanov's article "Novye Dannyeo Monetnom Chekane Jafaridov" (New Data on the Jaffarides' Dynastic Coinage).
An article "Monetnaya Politika Anglijskogo Korolya Eduarda III" (Monetary Politiks of King Edward III) by M. V. Mukha, written not long before her untimely death, presents the author's contribution to a series of most informative articles by the same author, dealing  with the issues of English medieval coinage on a basis of the State Hermitage Numismatics Department.
Coinage of the Ancient World is represented in an article by Yu. L. Diukov, which discusses representations of the Goddess Athens on the coins of Ancient Greece and also in an article by N.A.Frolova dedicated to the Tyran coinage of the late III-d - I centuries В.С.
The field of heraldry in the present Collection of works is represented by two articles: T. Yu. Stukalova offers her expertise of heraldic commentary to a miniature of the XIV century, while yet another article by the same author, written together with S.S.Levin as a co-author, offers an analysis of heraldic representations of the Order ofthe Holy Spirit.

Contributions by S. S. Levin - "K Istorii Uchrezhdcniya Znakov Pravoslavnogo Kamchatskogo Bratstva" (Further to a History of Installation of the Signs of Orthodox Kamchatka Brothership), by L. I. Dobrovolskaya "Russkiye Zhetony Как Proizvedeniya Medaliernogo Iskusstva Na Matcrialakh ON GE" (Russian Tokens as Specimen of Medal-making Art on the materials of the State Hermitage Numismatics Department), by V. I. Galanov — "Uralskiyc Ugol'nye Pechatki Iz Smolenska" (The Urals' Coal Stamps from Smolensk), and by O. A. Mamonova — "Ugol'nye Pechatki Sobraniya GIM" (Coal Stamps from the State Historical Museum Collection) testify to the continuation of research of "paranumismatical" subjects — tokens, signs, coal signets, offering the reader fresh and interesting information on certain less known phenomena of economic and political life of Russia as well as on some aspects of the Orthodox Church history.
An article by M.V.Sidorova "Stoletniy Iubiley Ordena Sv. Georgiya (1869)" (A Hundred Years Anniversary ofthe Russian Order of St. George (1869)), based on the documents from the State Archive of Russian Federation, is introducing the reader to the Ceremony of the Anniversary Celebration at the I mperial Court of Russia in 1869 and proceeds to publish the data on an exquisitely decorated manuscript, donated to the Emperor Alexander II in commemoration ofthe 100-years Jubilee. In the same year the manuscript was printed as a book by a military printing house.

In order to conclude this brief account of the present Collection of works' contents, one should not fail to mention an essay written by P.G.Gaidukov and dedicated to Nikolai Pavlovich Bauer — a prominent Russian scientist, whose scolarly heritage has not yet been used by our science to a fuller extent. The autumn of2002 marked a mournful anniversary — he had tragically perished 60 years ago. Facts of N.P.Bauer's biography, a synopsis of his works, as well as the data from his Death Investigation File, would finally offer us a complete and impartial assessment ofthe tragic fate of this outstanding researcher of the oldest period of Russian monetary circulation.
